This vintage candelabra, designed by Gunnar Ander for Ystad Metall, is a distinctive example of mid-20th-century Swedish design, combining a geometric structure with the decorative use of colored glass. Similar pieces by Ander for Ystad Metall date from the 1950s and 1960s. The structure is made of black metal, whose slender, curved elements create a light, almost graphic composition. The candelabra has four candle holders, positioned on slender vertical arms. Their simple, conical shades contrast with the decorative elements located in the central part of the composition. The most distinctive detail is the amber-colored glass elements. Three round glass discs are positioned between the metal arms, and the central section is adorned with an additional rectangular element in the same warm shade. The transparent, colored glass harmonizes beautifully with the black structure, giving the piece a distinctive yet very elegant character. The lower section is designed as a three-legged base, which ensures the piece’s stability while giving it a light and airy appearance. The slender legs flare outward toward the bottom, emphasizing the vertical composition. The design clearly showcases Gunnar Ander’s signature combination of metal, glass, and simple geometric forms. His designs for Ystad Metall are now celebrated as examples of Scandinavian modernism and mid-century Swedish design. This piece can serve both as a functional candelabra and as a decorative sculpture.
