An elegant Italian bed headboard incorporating an important antique carved and gilded wooden ornament in genuine gold leaf, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century. The carved ornament is the defining feature of the piece, with richly sculpted acanthus leaves, opposing scrolls and a pronounced central foliate motif. The deep and expressive carving is characteristic of the Italian Baroque decorative vocabulary. During the second half of the 20th century, the antique ornament was incorporated into a hand-crafted wooden structure finished in silver mecca, creating the present headboard. A blue textile canvas was stretched across the rear of the frame and secured to the wooden structure by the rear framework, creating a refined contrast with the antique gilded ornament without altering its sculptural character. The headboard measures 175 cm in width, 120 cm in height and approximately 6 cm in depth. Presented in good vintage condition, with natural signs of age, surface wear and variations to both the silver-mecca finish and the antique gilding.
