Louis XVI style oval carved and gilded wood mirror made in France in the 19th century during the Belle Époque period. Original beveled glass and finely carved cartouche depicting the royal symbols of Louis XVI. The arrows of justice crossed by a flaming torch of truth are joined by a floral crown and a tied bow. The flaming torch is an ancient symbol of life, truth and the regenerative power of fire, while the quiver of arrows indicates the ability to use force in the pursuit of justice. On either side of the torch and quiver is a garland of roses and other flowers and foliage. At the base of the frame there is another scroll. The oval frame surrounds the original beveled mirror glass which retains the familiar blemishes and flecks of truly antique glass. The inner edge features "les perles" (beads that resemble a string of pearls) alongside antique mirror glass. The color of the frame is original and is a combination of gold leaf gilding and gold paint gilding. Different types of gilding were used to achieve different shades of gold and therefore more definition.
