Ancient China shawl or kimono box, XIX century
The object consists of a lacquered wooden box likely to contain a shawl or light kimono or a part of it. It still contains the painted cardboard to keep the garment in the correct position. The wooden box is decorated with refined gold leaf decorations in the corners and edges, but especially in the central reserve, where, between lotus flowers and bamboo, a gallant scene is placed in the background of a round table. The removable inner painting is a watercolour painting made with great executive ability, with beautiful exotic flowers, in which two birds with splendid plumage are inserted; other decorations, multicoloured and elaborate, make the design bright, elegant, with a great surprise effect when opening the box. It bears an inscription in Chinese characters in the outer thickness. Conservation status: the wooden box has undergone some conservative restoration in the wood, some minor defects, but overall maintains its integrity and elegance; the design is in excellent condition in the visible part, with some defects and lacks in the peripheral parts. Dimensions: box 47 x 47 x 6 cm; design 44,5 x 44,5 cm
