Canterbury in walnut root, England, 19th century











Victorian Canterbury dating back to the mid -nineteenth century (about 1850). This specimen stands out for its superb invoice and the quality of the material, the walnut, which exhibits a splendid vein, particularly evident in the lower and higher shelf. Technical characteristics and details: Typology: Canterbury (Porta-Rivisti, Music holder) with integrated drawer. Vintage: Victorian, half of the 19th century (c. 1850). Material: solid walnut with walnut root sections, shiny finish that enhances its depth and richness of the vein. Structure: Upper shelf: it has a shaped edge and carved with a tunnel, with a central decorative motif that adds a touch of refinement. Ideal as a support surface for decorative objects or a reading lamp. Central compartments: four vertical dividers, finely carved with volutes and curls, create three distinct compartments. These are perfect for organizing musical scores, magazines, books or documents. The horizontal traverse in wood turned between the dividers add stability and further aesthetic detail. Inferiore shelf: large and solid, with a rich vein of the wood, offers a stable base and a further support space. Drawer: integrated in the lower part, with a bombed and shaped front profile, equipped with two original turned knobs. Legs and mobility: rests on four solid turned legs, each ending with the original brass wheels that allow an easy movement within the environment. Carvings and decorations: the tunnel carvings on the sides and the edge of the upper shelf, together with the internal dividers, are of the highest artisan quality and reflect the decorative taste typical of the Victorian period. Depth: 39 cm Conditions: The Canterbury is in excellent conservative conditions in relation to age, with an original patina that testifies to its authenticity. Mild signs of use are predictable and contribute to its historical charm. No significant structural damage. The wheels are fully functional.
