Fine set of four wooden columns, entirely carved and gilded by hand, dating from the 16th century and of Spanish origin. The shaft has a two-level zig-zag carved pattern, (fishbone), which gives depth and dynamism to the surface. The base is shaped and adorned with a rich acanthus leaf decoration, typical of the Renaissance repertoire, while the Ionic capital, also carved and gilded, is embellished with a garland of leaves and fruits, a symbol of abundance and vitality. The gilding, some of which has been worn away by time, creates striking contrasts of light and color that enhance the authenticity and ancient charm of these rare artifacts. They do not need restoration. These columns are an extraordinary testament to sixteenth-century Iberian craftsmanship, ideal for enhancing classical settings or collections of ancient art.
