Item description

Chinese porcelain plates or trays with cobalt blue hand-painted decorations under glass depicting delightful landscape, in the foreground two rabbits or hares are painted. The rabbit or hare is the fourth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac, according to traditional Chinese astrology, the rabbit or hare is quiet, reserved, retrospective, brooding and lucky. The hare and the rabbit are tied to the Moon and represent fecundity and rebirth. There are no signs at the base of these trays but we date them to the second half of the eighteenth century, Qianlong Period, about 1760, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) East India Company.
