Item description

Elegant and substantial green crystal vase, produced between 1950 and 1955 in Northern Bohemia, in the Jablonec nad Nisou area—a historically renowned region celebrated for its excellence in glassmaking. Since ancient times, this area has been one of Europe’s most important centers for glass blowing, shaping, cutting, and decoration. This tradition continues today through numerous artisan workshops and designers who preserve and reinterpret this refined and delicate craft. The vase features a classic, well-balanced form, enhanced by a star-cut base. It is made of high-quality lead crystal, prized for its high refractive index, which greatly enhances the brilliance and luminosity of the material. Traditional hand-cutting, grinding, and polishing techniques give the surface an exceptional ability to capture and reflect light, creating striking and elegant light effects. The entire body of the vase is adorned with finely executed, precision-cut motifs characteristic of Bohemian crystal production. The remarkable emerald-green color was achieved by adding chromium oxide compounds to the crystal during the melting process. This distinctive hue is the result of centuries of experimentation by Bohemian glassmakers, who mastered an extensive chromatic palette, producing ruby red through the use of gold and copper, deep blue with cobalt, and yellow and fluorescent green with uranium. When crystal glass was discovered in Italy around 1450—made possible by the addition of sodium and manganese to glass—Bohemia, already famous for its glassmaking tradition, quickly embraced the innovation. However, it was not until the 17th century that Bohemian artisans fully mastered the process, creating what became known as the most brilliant and luminous crystal ever produced: Bohemian crystal. With its commanding presence and timeless elegance, this vase embodies the rich artistic and technical heritage of Bohemian glassmaking. It is a distinctive decorative object, capable of enhancing any interior with sophistication and captivating light reflections. The vase is in good condition. Dimensions: diameter 16 cm (6.3 in); height 32 cm (12.6 in).
