Item description

A large and captivating Italian round table distinguished by its harmonious proportions and refined elegance. The legs, crafted as fluted columns with capitals at the top, rest on a cross-shaped base centered by an ebonized wooden sphere—an element that enhances both the structural stability and the visual balance of the piece. This table was produced between 1890 and 1895 in Cantù, in the province of Como, one of the most renowned centers in Lombardy for high-quality artisanal furniture making. This region has long been associated with exceptional cabinetmaking traditions, with workshops specializing in bespoke and finely crafted furnishings intended for a discerning clientele, including prestigious residential and hospitality interiors worldwide. The top is executed in exceptional walnut burl, further elevated by a particularly refined technique known as lastronatura. This Italian term has no exact English equivalent, as it refers to a process distinct from and historically predating modern wood veneering. Lastronatura is a traditional woodworking technique that spread throughout Europe as early as the 16th century and remained largely unchanged until the mid-19th century, prior to the Industrial Revolution. It was later revived in the early 20th century for the production of high-end furniture, particularly in France and Italy. The process involves manually sawing valuable hardwoods—such as walnut, mahogany, and various burl woods—into thick sheets measuring approximately 4 to 6 millimeters, which are then applied decoratively to furniture surfaces. The finishing process is intricate and highly specialized: the wood sheets were treated with natural earth pigments dissolved in water to achieve the desired tones, subtly antiqued using stone techniques, then sealed with hand-applied shellac. The final polishing was carried out through a meticulous twelve-step process using a cotton pad infused with shellac, linseed oil, and finely ground pumice stone. It is important to distinguish lastronatura from modern veneering. Contemporary veneer is machine-cut and typically less than 1 millimeter thick, whereas lastronatura involves significantly thicker sections (4–6 mm) and entirely manual craftsmanship. This technique allows for an extraordinary enhancement of the walnut burl’s natural figuring and tonal variation, creating a surface rich in depth and visual complexity. The interplay of color contrasts and dynamic grain patterns contributes decisively to the table’s distinctive character. The result is a highly refined and elegant piece of furniture that embodies the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility of a bygone era, while maintaining a timeless appeal and functional versatility. The table has been fully restored by our team of specialized artisans using traditional handcraft techniques, further enhancing the inherent quality of the wood and the excellence of its construction. Conceived to make a strong visual statement through its generous proportions, the table features clean, well-defined lines. Its design balances formal rigor with understated sophistication, resulting in a timeless piece that is both dynamic and dignified. Dimensions: Diameter 109 cm (42.9 in); Height 75 cm (29.5 in).
