Mario Bellini – “Le Bambole” Daybed for C&B Italia (1972)
A famous icon of Italian design, the "Le Bambole" daybed was designed by Mario Bellini for C&B Italia in 1972. The series achieved immediate international success, winning the prestigious Compasso d'Oro and entering the permanent collection of the MoMA in New York.
Bellini's innovative vision was to create furnishings that seemed to be "built into the fabric", giving life to soft, sculptural and welcoming shapes. The internal metal structure is completely hidden, while the polyurethane foam padding creates the characteristic monolithic and enveloping effect of the collection.
This example is covered in canvas, a material that enhances its warm and material elegance. The Jute underneath has been replaced with fabric. The fluid lines and the absence of visible rigid elements give the piece a sophisticated yet extremely relaxed presence.
