Item description

This elegant pair of French nightstands is an outstanding example of the Louis XVI Revival style, crafted in France between 1910 and 1920 by a distinguished cabinetmaking workshop in Lyon, a city renowned for its highly skilled furniture makers who produced elegant Neoclassical furnishings for an affluent bourgeois clientele seeking the timeless sophistication of the eighteenth century combined with the improved functionality of early twentieth-century craftsmanship. With their elegant proportions and exceptionally rich decorative details, these nightstands perfectly embody the refined Neoclassical aesthetic that characterized the furnishings of the Belle Époque and the early decades of the 20th century. They are made of a light-colored hardwood, most likely birch, which is then ebonized and finished with a deep, hand-polished black lacquer that beautifully accentuates their architectural lines. The entire structure is adorned with finely cast and chased gilt bronze fittings. The upper edge is framed by an elegant openwork gallery in the pure Louis XVI style, while immediately below runs a beautifully detailed frieze decorated with swags and hanging pendants. The four corners are adorned with finely chased gilt bronze mounts featuring stylized foliage motifs, showcasing the exceptional quality of the craftsmanship. Each nightstand retains its original top made of Carrara Bianco Statuario marble, one of the rarest and most prestigious varieties quarried from the famous quarries of the Apuan Alps near Carrara, Tuscany. Considered one of the purest marbles in the world due to its exceptionally low mineral impurities, Statuary Carrara marble was formed approximately 200 million years ago when what is now northern Tuscany lay beneath the sea. Limestone sediments deposited on the ancient seabed were transformed over millions of years by immense geological pressure and heat into this extraordinary natural stone, characterized by its luminous white background and exceptionally fine crystalline structure. Universally recognized as one of the world's most prestigious marbles, Carrara Statuary marble has been chosen for centuries by many of history's greatest sculptors—including Michelangelo, Donatello, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Antonio Canova—for some of the finest masterpieces of Western art. Their remarkable purity and luminous appearance lend these nightstands exceptional elegance, creating a sophisticated contrast with the deep ebonized finish and the brilliance of the gilt bronze hardware. The tall, slender, fluted legs end in elegant gilt brass feet, a characteristic feature of high-quality French cabinetmaking and a further indication of the exceptional standard of craftsmanship. One of the most fascinating aspects of this pair is how the two pieces complement each other. One nightstand has three practical drawers, while the other has a single top drawer above an open storage compartment. This is not the result of a later alteration but rather an original design concept frequently found in French master bedrooms of that period, where each nightstand was designed to serve a different function while maintaining perfect visual harmony. Traditionally, the three-drawer model was intended for the lady of the house, providing additional storage for personal belongings, linens, correspondence, accessories, and dressing items. The version with a single drawer and an open compartment was generally intended for gentlemen, providing convenient access to books, newspapers, slippers, or the traditional hot-water bottle. Although not an absolute rule, this complementary arrangement was widely adopted in French bedrooms from the late nineteenth century through the 1920s. Rather than diminishing the value of the pair, this original functional distinction significantly enhances its historical and collectible appeal, as it faithfully reflects the authentic layout of a period French bedroom. The exceptional craftsmanship, the richness of the gilt bronze fittings, the original Carrara marble tops, and the beautifully balanced proportions make this pair particularly desirable for both collectors and interior designers. Thanks to their perfect balance of classical elegance and understated sophistication, these nightstands are ideal for placing next to a grand bed in a luxurious master bedroom, while also making an equally impressive statement as end tables in an elegant living room, library, study, or grand entry hall. They blend seamlessly into Classical, Neoclassical, Art Deco, Transitional, and Contemporary Luxury interiors, where the striking contrast between the black ebonized finish, the brilliant white marble, and the warm gilt bronze creates a dramatic visual focal point. Their authenticity, original complementary design, and exceptional craftsmanship make this pair an outstanding example of early 20th-century French cabinetmaking, successfully combining historical significance, functionality, and timeless elegance. The nightstands have been carefully restored by hand by our team of skilled craftsmen using traditional conservation techniques and are now in excellent condition.
