Item description

Massimo Campigli - The Tax Collector III - Rare Suite with Wide Margins (Loose Sheets) - Hand-Signed - 1945 TECHNICAL DATA SHEET Artist: Massimo Campigli (1895–1971) Title: The Tax Collector III (Original Single Plate from the "The Tax Collector's Lament" portfolio) Period / Year: 1945 Technique: Original black and white lithograph Media: Fine handmade paper, specially manufactured by the historic Cartiere Fratelli Magnani of Pescia for this edition (1945). Signature: Autographed in pencil by the artist at lower right "Campigli 45". Full Sheet Size: 42 x 29 cm (Full-size machine, large, uncut margins). Dimensions of Printed Part (Matrix): 23.5 x 16 cm (Exact dimensions from the catalogue raisonné). Watermark: Editorial calligraphic monogram of Luigi Toninelli Editore impressed into the paper texture. Annotation on the verso: Historical title in pencil "Lamento Gabelliere", special edition letter "M", and contemporary numerical note. Reference bibliography: Francesco Meloni, "Campigli: l'opera grafica", Erker, 1995 (Plates 89-98). Gambetti-Vezzosi, "Bibliographic Rarities of the Italian Twentieth Century", p. 188. Description of the work: Prestigious original lithograph by Massimo Campigli printed in Milan in 1945 to illustrate Raffaele Carrieri's collection of poems, "Il Lamento del Gabelliere", published by Luigi Toninelli. Impeccable confirmation of the print run and rarity of the format: This copy possesses rigorous documentary characteristics that clearly and definitively differentiate it from ordinary plates extracted from the common book: The Large Margins: The sheet is presented in its original, intact format of 42 x 29 cm, whereas the trimmed and bound sheets in the commercial volume measure only approximately 32 x 26.5 cm. The Autograph Signature: Unlike the lithographs included in the book (which are editorially unsigned), this original loose sheet has been signed and dated by hand in pencil by the artist in the lower right ("Campigli 45"). The Special Edition "M": As attested in the colophon of the original 1945 edition, the Toninelli publishing house printed a very small group of special alphabetical copies (out of print / ad personam) intended for the publisher's collaborators and the artist. The letter "M" drawn in period pencil on the back uniquely identifies the sheet as belonging to this prestigious loose-leaf headstock series. Elements of visual authenticity: When held up to the light, the original watermarked calligraphic monogram of the LT (Luigi Toninelli) publishing series, imprinted on the Magnani paper support, is visible. On the back, the work bears the period title "Lamento Gabelliere" and a numerical note in pencil, a historical trace of old collector's cataloging or gallery stock. Condition: Very good / Good. Genuine period paper with slight and natural color shifts typical of a support hand-made in 1945. On the back, there are partial remnants of old period paper tape from a previous mount, a common conservation feature that does not in any way affect the visible surface of the front of the work. Guaranteed professional flat and rigid packaging (anti-bending) and fully tracked shipping.
