Item description

An important and fascinating pair of large posters dedicated to the golden age of ocean liners, based on two celebrated works by A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron, 1901–1968), one of the great masters of 20th-century Art Deco advertising. L'Amérique du Sud – L'Atlantique, measuring 65 × 100 cm, is based on the famous poster created by Cassandre in 1931 for the Compagnie de Navigation Sud-Atlantique. This example is a 1983 French lithographic reprint, published by Henri Mouron and Nouvelles Images, as documented by the perfectly legible original colophon in the lower margin: Cassandre / L'Atlantique / Poster 1931 / Coll. Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Zürich / Henri Mouron et Nouvelles Images Éditeurs 1983 / 45700 Lombreuil-France / Lithograph Printed in France / M142. Normandie – Compagnie Générale Transatlantique / French Line, 60 × 96 cm, reproduces the iconic poster created by Cassandre for the famous ocean liner Normandie and its maiden voyage on May 29, 1935, from Le Havre to Southampton to New York. Both feature Cassandre's characteristic graphic signature within the composition: "A.M. Cassandre 31" on the L'Atlantique and "A.M. Cassandre 35" on the Normandie. The two large prints have been housed under glass in matching wooden frames since the early 1980s. The overall condition is excellent considering their age and preservation; the numerous photographs show details, margins, and condition of the works and are an integral part of the description. The most significant marks are on the glass, not the print inside. A splendid pair for collectors and enthusiasts of Cassandras, Art Deco, historic advertising graphics, and great ocean liners. The two works are offered together as a single lot.
