Item description

Elegant and refined Austrian walnut coffee table; it was made in Art Deco style between 1936 and 1938 in a small carpenter's workshop in Abtenau, a small Austrian town in the district of Hallein near Salzburg, in the small town there are several wood workshops and it still houses one of the most important Austrian furniture factories: Voglauer. It has a simple but very sturdy structure; the legs have a particular shape, rounded at the front and cut at right angles at the back; very particular and interesting is the work done by the craftsmen in assembling different types of walnut in the table: the lower top and the legs are made of "European blond walnut", for the upper top they created a wonderful mosaic with slabs of walnut feathers and in the middle, they put a beautiful slab of walnut root. The 'European blond' walnut (Juglans Regia) is a very valuable wood, one of the best of all; the walnut feather is obtained from the most valuable part of the tree by cutting the trunk lengthwise at the point where it forks into two branches; the walnut root is obtained from the root of the tree. All these processes have enhanced the colours, flaming and grain of this precious and versatile wood. The ancient sanding, varnishing and polishing techniques have also increased the capacity of walnut wood not to impregnate itself: common polishing waxes, therefore, only act on the surface without affecting the inner part of the wood and making it spongy and therefore less resistant.
