Carved wooden coffee table by Jean Touret, 1950s
Low table in carved wood by Jean Touret, 1950. An essential square table with a carved surface typical of Touret's work. Its tambourine carving is considered organically minimalist and seems to recall the vigorous painting of the French Impressionists. The table is made of wood with joints. The furniture designed by the Marolles group under Touret's direction was guided by the concept of minimalism and a simplistic integrity achieved through the use of wood and iron and materials that he considered organic and expressive. Each piece was conceived for an essential purpose and produced in a limited edition. The Marolles group rapidly expanded over the years and achieved lasting success. The collective is distinguished not only by its intense artistic fervour, but also by the enormous risk it took by going against the grain.
