The comparison of the Coconut Chair to a section of coconut cut into eight parts goes back to the designer George Nelson himself, an influential exponent of mid-century American modernism. Conceived in 1955, Coconut is an authentic model of modernist design. On its chrome-plated tubular steel base rises the sculptural and spacious shell, upholstered in fabric. The Coconut armchair by Vitra is an alchemy of irony and rigour, technical suggestions and organic volumes.
