French Louis XVI-style bottle made of hand-carved and ground red crystal, 1930s
Hand cut and ground red crystal bottle; for its execution an excellent lead crystal was used, which gives the crystal itself a high refractive index; with manual artisan techniques of cutting, grinding and polishing, the surface of the bottle creates extraordinary plays of light and reflections; the color of the crystal concerns only the outside and was obtained with the addition of metal oxides and pigments (in this case copper oxide and gold chloride were added to obtain a very intense ruby shade) during casting to make sure that the color was then uniform; the glass masters then modeled the final shape of the bottle and, once cooled, cut and sanded the entire body by hand in a decorative and meticulous way, using small circular stone wheels; finally, the bottle was polished with a cork bark wheel wet with a mash of water and pumice, and finally the polishing phase, obtained with a felt wheel wet with a mash of water, iron oxide and cerium oxide .
