Item description

Mid-century sideboard-cabinet, catalogue no. U-450, designed by Jiri Jiroutek. Made of beech wood, veneer, plywood and laminate. In very good condition. The cabinet belongs to the famous Universal series (U-450), designed in 1958 for the Czechoslovak national company Interiér Praha by Czech designer Jiří Jiroutek. The success of the Czech pavilion at the 1958 Brussels Exhibition was followed by the rise of the Modernist style (called 'Brussels style' in Czechoslovakia). One of the most important representatives of the Brussels style are the wardrobes and chests of drawers of the U-450 series, with their typical pastel colours and sloping legs. In the Czechoslovakia of the 1960s and 1970s, they could be found in almost every modern home. The cabinets were unique not only for their design, but also for the technological innovation that enabled their mass production and availability at a time when the demand for furniture in Czechoslovakia was enormous. These cabinets were among the first to be made from ready-made pieces, which were then assembled. The same technological process allowed for cheaper furniture and the expansion of companies like IKEA. This piece of furniture is original from the 1960s, but has been completely refurbished to meet today's standards. Height: 77 cm length: 110 cm depth: 45 cm
