Item description

A French natural wicker basket; this is an old baker's bread basket, used to rest the bread dough before baking and later to hold the famous crispy 'baguettes'. Originally it was undoubtedly lined with white linen fabric; it was made in the Paris suburbs between 1930 and 1935 by some small craftsman who used and hand-woven natural wicker in a truly exemplary way, even creating a pleasing pattern. The whole structure is very compact and solid, made of wooden sticks on which the wicker has been worked; on the shorter sides are integrated the two sturdy handles, under the basket two wooden planks have been placed longitudinally to give solidity to the whole structure and also to facilitate the sliding of the basket on the floor. Although it began life as a bread basket, its uses can be many: a large laundry basket, great for a storage room, an interesting accessory for an eclectic or traditional kitchen, a toy box in the children's room, a practical newspaper holder for a country-style living room, a pleasant wood holder next to the fireplace, but it is your imagination that will determine the most suitable use for it in your home decor. Wicker is an all-time favourite; this material is made by weaving branches of willow or other plants. The elasticity and strength of willow wicker make it ideal for making baskets and containers. The origins of wicker are very ancient; in fact, this material accompanied mankind even before the discovery of weaving and ceramics in its history. It is probably one of the oldest handicrafts known to man. In fact, as far back as the Neolithic period, wicker was used as a container, given its ease of construction. Already in the Middle Ages, the first guilds were formed and, at the end of the last century, wickerwork became a real specialised industry. It is, without doubt, a tradition whose fascination lies in creating true works of art from a poor material such as pruning branches. The baguette is a type of bread characterised by an elongated shape, a crisp crust and a soft, developed crumb, obtained by a slow, natural leavening process. The classic French baguette is about 65/70 cm long, 5 or 6 cm wide and about 3 or 4 cm high. For these reasons, the baguette is a type of bread that can hardly be confused with other types of bread and rolls. Over time, the baguette has become one of the symbols of France. The basket is in excellent condition. Measures width cm.78, depth cm.52, height cm.40.
