Item description

Pair of original and unique bedside tables in lacquered maple wood; the large lower space of each bedside table is enclosed by two elegantly rounded doors. The doors, fitted with brass handles, have been made so that their height slightly exceeds the glass top, thus creating a comfortable and refined height difference. The legs have a triangular cross-section and taper downwards, very graceful and characteristic is the brass protection at the end, the legs, with their pure and angular linearity, contrast pleasantly with the curved design of the bedside tables, the top is made of glass and the light green colour has not been applied to the surface but has been amalgamated with the fusion of the glass itself (glass paste), which therefore cannot wear or change colour over time. The craftsmen treated the maple wood with ancient sanding, varnishing and polishing techniques, thus enhancing the colours, flaming and grain of this beautiful wood. The style of the bedside tables is that of the 1950s, affirming a futuristic imagery, without superfluous ornamentation, very minimal. They were handcrafted between 1950 and 1953 in Meda, in the province of Monza and Brianza, in Lombardy, a town famous for its design industry and historical handcrafted production of classic and modern furniture; all the parameters of the bedside tables lead us to attribute them with good certainty to the famous Italian designer Ico Parisi. Ico Parisi (Palermo 1916 - Como 1996) was one of the protagonists of the Como culture of the 20th century; from 1936 he worked at the important Studio Terragni, where he met and frequented well-known personalities of Como architecture and art; between 1948 and 1950 Ico Parisi dedicated himself to the study of furniture and furniture design, and in 1951 he began friendships and collaborations with artists, designers and architects such as Lucio Fontana, Bruno Munari, Mario Radice and Gio Ponti. These relationships profoundly influenced his approach to architecture and furniture design and exemplified Ico Parisi's desire to integrate a synthesis of the arts into his work. By the mid-1950s, Parisi had become one of Italy's most influential furniture designers, with a unique modern aesthetic using softwoods often shaped into sweeping, undulating curves and brightly coloured upholstery. Ico Parisi is a 'humanistic' artist-figure who is difficult to place, he was an architect and designer but also a photographer, director and painter, in short an all-round artist; he died in Como on 19 December 1996. Width 56 cm, depth 33 cm, height 56 cm. The bedside tables are in good condition. For all shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
