Splendid pair of Italian Baroque bookends from the 19th century. The pair is made with an onyx base. The onyx stone has been carved to make the paperweights semi-equal. Above each stone are two bronze sculptures in the shape of a dog, or rather a German shepherd, who almost watches over each book they hold. The splendid carving of the bronze denotes incredible details of the animals, such as their fur and physiognomy. Each animal is statuesquely positioned as if to protect the guarded object. Of great elegance and value, the pair is ideal for period, classic and precious bookcases or for high-end desks.
