Item description
Napoleon III table clock made in France in the second half of the 19th century (1860s-80s). Finely chiseled gilt bronze body with hand-painted Sèvres porcelain plaque depicting a gallant scene; overlying part with highly elaborate chiseled work within which is a glazed porcelain dial. The surmounting part is enriched by the presence of a putto in a joyful attitude. Signed "Bordon in Montpellier". Complete with pendulum and key with perfectly functioning mechanism. The gilding is galvanic: the discovery of galvanic technique began in 1791 when Luigi Galvani discovered the electric fluid, which is why all electrolysis procedures are called galvanostegia, a term derived from his surname, Galvani. Galvanic gilding is an electrochemical process that uses what is known as a galvanic bath: a thin layer of gold is adhered to a metal using electric current; this carries positively charged gold ions and adheres to the metal, which has a negative charge instead. Eventually, therefore, a uniform, thin layer is deposited.
