Item description

Tripolina folding chair by Vittoriano Viganò, 1930s. Wooden structure with metal fixings and removable seat in high-quality leather. The original Tripolina chair was invented by Englishman Joseph Beverley Fenby. It was patented in the United Kingdom in 1877 and in the United States in 1881. It was used in military campaigns, where it was ideal because it was designed to fold compactly while remaining comfortable and stable. It was manufactured by Fenby's company in the United Kingdom and shortly thereafter in Wisconsin, USA. Later, by the Italian company Viganò in Tripoli, Libya. A stamp with the company's logo is visible on the seat. Bibliography: Domus no. 97, January 1936. I. de Guttry, M. P. Maino, Il mobile déco italiano, Laterza, 1988, p. 56.
