A rectangular coffee table or sofa table made entirely of wood, designed by Ettore Sottsass for Poltronova, Agliana 1960s. Son of an architect, Ettore Sottsass jr. (1917-2007) was born in Innsbruck, educated in Turin and graduated from the city's Polytechnic in 1939 before starting work with his father in 1945. After opening his own studio in Milan he became interested in industrial design and to interior design. His work with ceramics and goldsmithing is known for its expressive power and for his personal study and analysis of color (an aspect that is still a constant in all of his work). Going beyond the rationalist movement of his time, Sottsass forged his own path in design, creating very different objects with a strong emotional component. His projects for the Milan Triennale and, above all, with Olivetti (starting from 1957), for which he designed famous typewriters such as the Praxis 48, the Lettera 36 and the Valentine, have gone down in the history of design. Also for Olivetti, Sottsass designed Elea 9003, the first Italian computer, which earned him a Compasso d'Oro in 1959 (he won a second one in 1970 for Valentine). His profound formal research, continuous attention to the new avant-gardes, experimentation and conceptual art made Sottsass a leading exponent and a source of inspiration for numerous currents of 1960s design in Italy and Europe. He created experimental furniture (including some unique pieces) and participated in the famous 1972 exhibition on the domestic habitat of the future at the MoMA in New York entitled Italy. In the early 1980s he founded the Memphis group, which deals with the production of objects and furniture, and his own studio, Sottsass Associati, which deals with architecture as well as design. His collaborations and friendships with artists and critics were very important to Sottsass' career. From the 1990s onwards he concentrated on architecture, mainly houses and town planning. During his long career, Sotsass has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the title of Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres in France (1992) and honorary degrees at the Rhode Island School of Design in the USA (1993). and at the Royal College of Art in London (1996).
