Item description

Napoleon III patinated bronze sculpture made in France in the 19th century, signed "Moureau" and depicting Philippides, a glorious Greek soldier. According to Herodotus' account, an Athenian emerodrome named Philippides was sent from Athens to Sparta to ask for support ahead of the battle against the Persians and traveled this journey of more than 225 km in one day. After the battle of Marathon, again according to Herodotus, a large part of the Athenian army returned to the city led by Miltiades marching some 42 km under the weight of armor; the Greek soldiers arrived in time to see that the Persian fleet, having ascertained defeat, was moving away, having attempted an attack on the polis by means of a maneuver to outflank the Greek ranks that involved rounding Cape Sunius by sea. The next best-known legend, that of Philippides' race from Marathon to Athens, was not, however, the work of Herodotus, but first appeared in a work by Plutarch composed in the first century, On the Glory of the Athenians. In it Plutarch states that an emerodromus in full armor would run from Marathon to Athens, utter the famous phrase "we have won" (Ancient Greek: Νενικήκαμεν?, Nenikèkamen) and then die from exertion; according to Plutarch, the historian Heraclides Ponticus called this legendary emerodromus Thysippus, while most historians call him Eucle.
