Item description

The Pluvium umbrella stand was designed by Giancarlo Piretti for Anonima Castelli in 1972. It features a rotating stack of six discs on a weighted base. Giancarlo Piretti was born in Bologna in 1940. He attended the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Bologna, where he obtained the title of drawing teacher. In 1960, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. He then taught interior design at the State Art Institute of Bologna for seven years. During the same period he worked as an interior designer for twelve years at Anonima Castelli, designing his furniture lines for the home, office and community, for which he filed numerous industrial and mechanical invention patents and ornamental models. Among his best known designs are Plia, a folding chair, Plato, a folding table, DSC (106-AXIS), a seating system for community and institutional spaces, Sistema 61, a modular sofa system. Anonima Castelli was founded in 1877 by Ettore Castelli as a cabinetmaker. After a gradual transformation, between the 1960s and 1980s, the company gave shape to one of the most vital and innovative projects in the world, collaborating with illustrious names in Italian and international design: Emilio Ambasz, Rodolfo Bonetto, Nilo Gioacchini, Giancarlo Piretti, Charles Pollock, F. A. Porsche, Richard Sapper, Claudio Bellini, Michele De Lucchi, Doriana and Massimiliano Fuksas, Gino Gamberini, Enzo Mari and Mario Ruiz. His products soon became iconic and were chosen to furnish the most important presidential offices of banks and large industries.
