Item description

An original and very particular chandelier made in Space Age style; the entire architecture of the chandelier is made of polished brass, thickly chrome-plated by means of a galvanic bath. The central structure consists of a large round tube and in the upper part 12 bars are arranged radially, at the end of each of which is a chain supporting a metal cap with a crystal ball inserted; in the lower part 6 rectangular metal bars branch off the tube, three of which have a crystal ball at the upper end and at the lower end the housing for a light bulb (see demonstration photo). In the other three the arrangement is reversed, i.e. at the upper end is the light point while at the lower end is the crystal ball; in the central part of each bar is fixed a chain supporting a metal cap with a crystal ball inserted, the same system used for the upper part of the chandelier. Thanks to this ingenious arrangement, three bulbs direct the light upwards while the other three diffuse it downwards; thus all the light in its path meets both the upper and lower crystal spheres, creating incredible plays of light and extraordinary rays; in addition, the polished metal surface of the entire structure helps to enhance and expand this luminous movement. It is the work of Gaetano Sciolari, a famous and prolific Italian designer and entrepreneur; it was designed and made between 1970 and 1975 in the Space AGE style in a craft workshop in Milan, one of many that Sciolari used to make his creations. Angelo Gaetano Sciolari, born in 1927 in Italy, was instrumental in the success of Italian design around the world, particularly in the United States. He was an excellent businessman and an innovative creative designer. Throughout his career, he designed incredible lights. In 1949, after the death of his father, he had to run the family business producing light fittings. Within a few years, the designer turned the company into an international enterprise! Manufacturer Sciolari became the first seller of Italian lamps in the United States (imported from America by Lightolier and Progress Lighting)! Gaetano Sciolari and his products have been a source of inspiration and model for artisans and important Italian lighting companies. The style of the chandeliers is the 'Space Age', this aesthetic current was born at the dawn of the space age, commonly attributed to the launch of Sputnik in October 1957, and continued until the 1970s. The objects of this period are characterised by essential volumes that recall geometric shapes, breaking definitively with the rationalist tradition. In the continuity of the 1950s, the design of the 1960s gave way to freedom and innovation. Design exploded in a variety of styles and movements, giving way to roundness, freedom of form and movement, lightness and simplicity. The lamps of that period are characterised by essential volumes that recall geometric shapes. Curved, round and spherical lines are favoured, breaking definitively with the rationalist tradition. The materials are cold, shiny and metallic. Our chandelier with its simple and essential design hides an ingenious, innovative and practical soul, ready to diffuse light according to our needs; a model that is the result of careful stylistic research, in line with that historical period straddling past and future. The chandelier with its distinctive design is ideal to decorate and brightly illuminate any room in the house, an elegant and modern piece of furniture. The chandelier is in good condition, the chrome-plated parts show slight and insignificant signs of time, but this guarantees its age and authenticity. It measures 92 cm in height, 42 cm in diameter. The electrical system is working but the wiring is European, voltage compatibility in other countries should always be checked by an electrician before use. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) to ensure maximum protection and safety of the objects.
