Item description

Advertising poster promoting tourism in Milan made by Stefano Pizzi, 1980s. Stefano Pizzi (1955, Pavia) is a painter, printmaker and ceramicist. He studied at the Liceo Artistico and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, of which he was Deputy Director and is currently Chair of Painting, Head of External Relations and member of the Board of Directors. During the 1970s he actively participated in the initiatives of the Student Movement and in the internal debate of the New Left phenomena. An animator of cultural instances and interventions in the social field, he still conducts a constant exhibition activity through personal exhibitions and national and international reviews to which he is invited from time to time. The itinerary of his research has always tended to develop a confrontation between painting and its support, which is technically expressed in the dialogue between the painted iconography and that of the materials on which he works. This dialectic between subject and context, meaning and signifier, has distinguished him within the art system toward which he has always taken a critical if not antagonistic stance. The early choice of academic teaching proved to be a further stimulus to participation in contemporary artistic debate with constant attendance at conferences, seminars, and work-shops. A research author, he is also known to the general public for his spectacular urban installations made during the 1980s and 1990s. He combines painting with graphic art and ceramics. His works are in numerous public and private collections in Italy, abroad and on several cruise ships of the Costa fleet.
