Alanda sofa by Paolo Piva for B&B Italia. A true design product typical of the 1990s. Made of steel with grey Alcantara upholstery, with completely removable covers. Armrests and headrest are repositionable by means of a hinge mechanism with automatic locking into different positions and manual release. The sofa has an additional complete cover in aviation blue cotton. The Alcantara upholstery is in very good condition, with no tears or cracks; the cotton upholstery is also perfect, without any defects. In the 1980 project with Alanda, an explicit play on the composition of parts is implemented... the sofa appears as an articulated organism in which each element declares its own function. It is the collaboration with CR&S that leads to the invention that makes Alanda a truly new design object. It is not a simple sofa: a new patented mechanism (a hinge device with automatic locking in different positions and normal release) which, applied to the sectional steel frame, allows agile changes of the large headrest cushion from the horizontal to the vertical position and vice versa. The armrests also rotate around a pivot, assuming several easily adjustable positions. The upholstery is made of cold-foamed polyurethane. The Alanda sofa, one of Piva's best known products, has long been a B&B Italia best seller.
Paolo Piva was born in Adria and trained in Venice, where he was strongly influenced by the teachings of Tafuri, Carlo Aymonino and Carlo Scarpa. Piva inseparably fuses design theory and practice: not through utopian projects but with real, practical objects. Founded in 1966, B&B Italia is a leading Italian company in the international design furniture sector. It is located in Milan and boasts prestigious headquarters designed in 1972 by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Its products have contributed to writing the history of Italian design.
