Item description

Art Deco purple glass flower holder bowl by Pierre D'Avesn, 1930s. Original and iconic moulded glass flower bowl. The round, perforated glass element for inserting the flowers is removable, so the object can also be used as a bowl or ashtray. Its form is simple and bold, cleverly proportioned, the result of intelligent aesthetic reflection in pure Art Deco style. Nickel oxide was added during the fusion of the glass to achieve the soft, refined purple colour. Although it bears no signature (in this type of bowl and with this artist, this was often the case), we can say with certainty that it was produced in France between 1930 and 1935 by Pierre D'Avesn, an artist working at the Daum glassworks at the time, where he developed an innovative moulded glass technique, resulting in pieces of incredible transparency and brilliance such as this bowl. Pierre D'Avesn was born in 1901 and initially worked for René Lalique for 10 years. During this period, he designed the famous "Snake" vase and the "Tourbillons" vase, two of Lalique's most expensive collector's items. In 1926, he left René Lalique and created his own designs; from 1930 to 1936, he was a valuable and creative collaborator of the Daum company; he then had his creations produced at the Cristalleries de Saint-Remy. Considered the elite of the last Art Deco glassmakers, he died at the age of 90. The bowl is in very good condition, only the removable part to hold the flowers is slightly chipped at the edge (see photos).
