DYI: 5 tips for a home lifting

Making photo albums, calling friends you haven't heard from in a lifetime and trying a new recipe in the kitchen are some of today’s popular activities. And, we shall add, that these are good times to take care of small projects for your house. There is no better occasion to devote yourself to these activities and get a little satisfaction from your "do it yourself" interior design.

How many times have you walked through your house thinking about fixing that mark on the wall, that squeak in the door or that little problem on the chair? Well, it looks like it's time to get down to these issues. intOndo has thought of pointing out a few little DIY activities that will give you great satisfaction. Whether you're alone or with your family, these little upgrades will save you some money, will bring some novelties to your home and, above all, will make your spare time extra productive.

2. Start with surfaces

Among the various projects, we recommend that you give priority to those involving the decoration of surfaces and walls: filling a nail hole in the wall, attaching a picture, or painting a room, are actions that give immense satisfaction to little ones and grownups alike! Buy a nice cloth to cover your floor and furniture and get the right tools like nails and hammer; jar of plaster and the spatula; or get paint, rollers and brushes, and start the operation. To paint a wall, we recommend that you initially proceed in diagonal lines and then spread the paint horizontally and vertically. Let the first coat of paint dry and then repeat. If the application of paint is not for you, you can always renew the look of your walls using stencils and wallpaper (stairs and small rooms are great places to experiment!).

3. Refreshing furniture and lighting

Especially if you have some piece of furniture that never seemed so great, you can easily improve their appearance. A little bit of elbow grease will help wooden furniture get a new life. Clean, paint or, for a French look, bring wood back to its natural colour. Buy 3 thicknesses of sandpaper and start scratching on the larger surfaces and then proceed with the curved ones and go to the corners using small cutouts of the finer paper. Dust with a brush and then apply a colour that reflects the palette of your home or a state of varnishing oil. If you have a plastic or chromed item with problems try to fill its defects and scratches with a liquid marker pen of the same tone as the furniture.

4. Spring cleaning

There are places where we never put our hands, but which can hold real treasures. It may be a forgotten attic, a densely "populated" closet or perhaps a pantry where we store objects that have no place of their own. Open those doors and make way in the most hidden corners of the house, you can find some vintage treasures such as clothes and photographs, or in the worse case scenario you will end up making your home more tidy and clean - which never hurts.

5. Focus on details

Everyone knows, details make all the difference at home. The fabric can be of great alley and you don't need to be an upholsterer to re-lined a chair, an old basket or a TV stand that has aged over time. Think about rearranging your linen for the winter: take extra care in packing clothes and sheets in the wardrobe. You might use a ribbon o a nice string, as if they were a gift for next year, Marie Kondo can offer lots of suggestions. Finally, you can have fun replacing door handles and drawers: these little things are everyday items, and everytime you will use them in the future they will bring back the memory of having spent this time in a productive way.
