What looked like a cozy living room decorated with antique furniture and art objects was also… Elsie De Wolfe’s bathroom in her French home at the Petit Trianon, Versailles! Not just simply a service room, but designed as a real room.

By the 20s, when immortalized by prominent photographers such as Edward Steichen, De Wolfe (1865 – 1950) was not just one of New York’s most fashionable women and socialites… but also the first interior designer in history — what a revolution for a woman at the time!

«Light, air, and comfort» are 3 elements to have in a room, De Wolfe used to repeat to her clients. Use «plenty of optimism and white paint», and… «don’t go with furniture of some one period.» In her book, The House in Good Taste, de Wolfe pioneered the mix and match trend!
