The dining table: the beating heart of the home, a meeting point for family and friends, where precious moments are shared and relationships are cultivated. Today, in the increasingly widespread context of smartworking, the home becomes a workplace, and even for those who do not have a formal dining room, this piece of furniture has transformed into an indispensable workstation.
Today we compare two illustrious table examples, different in materials, design eras and visual impact: the Eros table by Angelo Mangiarotti (1921-2012) and the Reale table by Carlo Mollino (1905-1973), two masterpieces of made in Italy design Italy, embodiment of the elegance and genius of its creators, who designed them to last over time.
Thus were born two tables so iconic that both continue to be produced by major design brands - the Reale table by Zanotta while the Eros table by Agapecasa - fitting easily into the panorama of contemporary best-sellers of these brands.
The multifaceted and eccentric Turin designer Carlo Mollino designed Reale in 1947: the table was designed specifically to furnish the offices of the Reale Mutua insurance company in Turin, and it is perhaps precisely for this reason that it still proves particularly suitable for office furnishings, for the study or library area of the home: its shapes are a prelude to the 50s style while remaining unique in their kind, equally suitable for a kitchen or dining room where you want to place an elegant and cultured piece.
The Milanese architect and designer Angelo Mangiarotti (1921-2012) designed Eros in 1971, at the dawn of a decade full of experimentation, feelings of rupture with the past, and of course protest. The playful but reassuring, almost sculptural shapes of this piece certainly make it approachable to eclectic combinations, in which ancient and contemporary mix fearlessly thanks to furnishings with a strong character.
A matter of taste, as always: on the one hand there is the sense of extreme lightness evoked by the Reale table, the result of a transparent glass top supported by oak wood supports with ergonomic shapes that point outwards, as typically happens in Mollino's furniture. The designer made the theme of lightening the supports one of his primary research, in this case taking inspiration from the beloved world of aeronautics (the supports of the wooden base derive in fact from the skeletons of aircraft produced in Turin by the Ansaldo company).
On the other hand, the sculptural and massive presence of Eros, which makes it a piece bordering on Brutalism, an effect obtained from the combination of marble and the interlocking system, without joints or fastenings, which it combines the top and the truncated cone-shaped legs.
Splendid as desks, perfect for lunch: the more the flexibility of the living space increases, the more one looks for furnishings that combine form and function impeccably, without sacrificing the style and aesthetics of the environment. This is why vintage dining tables are among the most sought after pieces on the market, by interior designers and in general, by all those who are preparing to furnish a new space with taste and perzonalization.
