Item description

This striking and generously sized armchair is a fine example of mid-century Italian craftsmanship, made from natural bamboo and handwoven wicker cane. The robust structure, built with thick bamboo poles, is gracefully integrated with a wide seat, high supportive backrest, and a strong base, where the bamboo elements are tightly and skillfully joined. The entire frame is heat-shaped, while the bindings are made of handwoven wicker cane, giving the piece a light, airy appearance despite its solid construction. Handcrafted between 1960 and 1965 in a workshop in Brianza (Lombardy, Italy), this armchair represents the excellence of Italian artisanal tradition. The rustic style originated in the United States in the late 19th century and soon gained popularity across Europe, particularly in Italy, where it flourished in regions such as Brianza, the Po Valley, and Tuscany. Although once regarded as a modest material, bamboo has since become a refined and luxurious design element. Its transformation requires hours of detailed handwork by highly skilled artisans — a craft that is now increasingly rare and collectible. The term “bamboo” refers to a group of evergreen grasses known for their rapid growth and strength. All bamboo species feature tall, hollow stems that are both lightweight and highly durable. This versatile material is widely used in the production of furniture, decorative objects, and even flooring and architectural elements. Bamboo is especially valued for its resistance to the elements. Its flexible yet sturdy stems, combined with a deep root system, allow it to withstand harsh weather without breaking — making it a symbol of purity, strength, and resilience. Similar natural materials used in fine furniture-making include: • Rattan: sourced from “Indian cane,” which, when sun-dried at the edge of tropical forests, becomes exceptionally strong and durable. Used for outdoor and indoor furniture, both with and without bark. • Wicker Cane (Midollino): derived from the inner core of rattan and split into ultra-thin strips. Finer and more refined than standard rattan, but also more delicate. • Wicker: created by weaving flexible branches of willow or other pliable plants. Its strength and flexibility have made it a traditional choice for baskets and furniture. • Reed (Giunco): a perennial plant found in marshy or coastal areas, traditionally used to produce Viennese cane webbing. While bamboo is primarily cultivated in China, Thailand, and Indonesia, it is also grown in select regions of Italy with suitable climates — such as Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany. Regardless of the origin of the raw material, the entire crafting process takes place in Italy, ensuring a finished product that is a true expression of Italian design, artisanal skill, and artistic sensibility. For generations, Italian craftsmen have proudly passed down their expertise, creating timeless pieces admired for their elegance and character — true works of functional art. Condition: Good vintage condition, with light, age-appropriate wear. Dimensions: Width: 58 cm (22.8 in). Depth: 80 cm (31.5 in). Height: 100 cm (39.4 in).
