Beautiful six-armed Murato glass chandelier worked in a reticello pattern, designed by Aureliano Toso in the 1950s One of the most elegant decorative techniques developed by the Murano glass masters is that of “filigree glass” or more simply “filigree”. From the simplest “half filigree” technique, the more elaborate and complex “reticello filigree” or “double filigree” and “retortoli filigree” or “zanfirico” techniques were later developed. Invented in Murano in the 16th century, they were then exported by the Venetians throughout Europe and were particularly popular in the 19th century. These techniques are realised using transparent (crystal) glass rods containing rectilinear or intertwined threads of white (lattimo) or coloured glass inside, creating the effect of a delicate lace within the glass wall.
