This is a Chinese soapstone sculpture (shoushan) depicting a deity of wisdom or longevity, probably one of the Eight Immortals or a high dignitary, recognizable by his elaborate headdress, long flowing beard and the Ruyi scepter he holds in his hands, a symbol of good luck.
The statue rests on an octagonal base in contrasting colored stone, carved with Greek motifs. As for the era, the style of the carving and the patina of the stone suggest production dating from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century (late Qing dynasty or Republic period), an era in which these objects were very popular both for the domestic market and for export to the West.
