This soapstone statue depicts a Chinese deity, probably Shoulao (the god of longevity), recognizable by his long beard and the staff topped by a lingzhi mushroom that he holds in his left hand. The figure wears a flowing ceremonial robe with soft volumes and an elaborate decorated headdress, while resting on a multi-tiered octagonal base carved from a darker, veined stone.
As regards the era, the style of the carving and the type of patina suggest a production dating back to the first half of the 20th century, approximately between 1920 and 1950, a period in which these objects were made in large quantities for export to the West.
