Item description

Luigi Cherbuin (Basel 1810 - Milan 1875) was an important etcher and designer active mainly in Milan. Author of a large number of views was the main illustrator of the Album Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan. This album was published annually from 1839 to 1861 first by Carlo Canadelli and then by Giuliano Canadelli e C., in the form of a strenna with plates depicting the works exhibited annually at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. He was a skilled and careful vedutista capable of capturing the beauty of everyday life both by engraving his own inventions and by reproducing paintings or photographs of other authors. In this regard, it is worth remembering the Dragherrotipo series of views of Milan, the first example of the use of photography as a model for engravings, extended to other Italian cities for a total of 119 plates. This translation table shows a painting made by Angelo Inganni (Brescia 1807 - Gussago 1880) on commission of the Noble Signor Filippo dei Marchesi Villani. We see Piazza Borromeo in Milan during a heavy snowfall. The buildings surrounding the square have whitewashed roofs, the slender trees in the foreground are bare, animating the scene gentlemen in coats and sheepskin, a curate, two dogs, a wagon and a carriage, an animated scene that seems described as in a photogram. Note on the right the sign of a "Tobacco/salt and paper store" just below the sign with the double-headed eagle of the Emperor of Austria. Beyond the image at the bottom is the engraved title and below in the right corner "Cherbuin dis. et inc". Excellent impression with chiaroscuro contrasts. Excellent condition. Small margins beyond the edge of the copper. Bibliography: Paolo Arrigoni, Milano nelle vecchie stampe, 1970 (Album Esposizione di Belle Arti in Milano, a III-XI, 1839-51), 1970, 189/6.
