Item description

Hand-knotted wool pile on wool or cotton foundation (typical knot density for fine Shirvans: approx. 120–180 knots per square inch). Original wool selvedges and end fringes. Even low pile with authentic patina from 130–150 years of gentle use; uniform wear without major repairs, holes, or over-restoration – preserving the rug’s genuine, lived character. Provenance – A Mark of Authenticity and Prestige: The rug bears its original Adil Besim label affixed to the reverse (Wien 1010, Graben 30; branches in Innsbruck and Pasadena, California). Adil Besim remains one of Vienna’s most revered Oriental carpet dynasties. Founded in 1946 by Adolf Böhm (who adopted the name Adil Besim after relocating to Turkey in 1923 and marrying an Armenian weaver), the firm – together with cousin Friedrich Langauer – became synonymous with the highest-quality antique rugs. Located at the prestigious Graben 30 address opposite St. Stephen’s Cathedral, it served museums, aristocracy, and discerning collectors for decades. The presence of the U.S. Pasadena branch (1756 E. Colorado Blvd.) and the old Austrian phone prefix 0222 dates the label precisely to the 1970s–1980s. In 2018, Dorotheum Vienna dedicated a landmark single-owner auction to the Adil Besim Collection – 152 rare antique pieces accumulated since 1946. Many late-19th-century Caucasian rugs from that sale achieved strong results, confirming the firm’s reputation for handling only top-tier antiques. This label is far more than a tag: it is official certification that the rug was professionally appraised, conserved, and marketed as a genuine 19th-century antique by one of Europe’s premier houses.
