Item description

Guglielmo Baldassini (Genoa 1885 - Valparaiso 1952) was a painter and engraver. He trained at the Academy of Brera for three years, and then abandoned his academic studies and studied as a self-taught looking especially at the landscape and the possibilities of light on it. Since 1914 he devoted himself to etching and this new artistic vocation led him to fame. He exhibited in London, Tokyo and other national and international exhibitions. In this print, through strong chiaroscuro contrasts we see represented a view of the Milanese Naviglio when it still flowed in the city center. It is probably the stretch corresponding to the current Via San Damiano with the iron bridge called the Sirenette in the background. Through clear and dynamic lines the atmosphere becomes cold; the water flows slowly and on the surface are reflected dark shadows from the bare and twisted trunks that protrude from the left, it looks like a white winter day. In the distance a bridge and the houses are affected by a brighter light and the short almost only scratched stroke makes them look ethereal. At the bottom in pencil, beyond the image on the left, numbering 27/65 and title, on the right signature. Excellent impression on thick ivory paper. Excellent state of preservation. Wide margins beyond the beat of the copper.
