Item description

The three-seater sofa designed by Grete Jalk and produced by France & Søn is a refined example of Danish modernism from the 1960s—a period when form was carefully balanced with functionality. Models from this series were developed in the early 1960s and are defined by their light, open frame and full-length seat and back cushions. This was not accidental—the design aimed to provide everyday comfort while also allowing for easy transport thanks to France & Søn’s knock-down construction system . Many versions featured sprung cushions, enhancing overall seating comfort . The frame is crafted from solid teak wood, a signature material of Danish design. Teak ensures durability and structural stability while offering a warm, natural tone that ages beautifully. The gently shaped armrests and visible wood grain highlight the craftsmanship, while the open-back construction allows the sofa to stand freely in a room . The wooden elements of sofa have been professionally and carefully restored by removing old coatings, staining and finishing with varnish. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with over 20 years of experience. The cushions on the sprung frame have been reupholstered in a beige fabric made from recycled wool. The upholstery foam has also been replaced. Thanks to these treatments, the desk looks stunning and will serve its new owner for many years without fear of damage or wear from everyday use. Stylistically, the sofa sits firmly within the mid-century modern and Scandinavian design tradition. There are no unnecessary decorative elements—everything serves a purpose. The proportions and slightly reclined backrest create a comfortable, relaxed seating position suitable for everyday use. In practice, this is a sofa that balances comfort, durability, and versatility. The cushions provide a soft yet supportive seating experience, while the solid teak frame ensures longevity. At the same time, its light visual presence makes it suitable even for smaller interiors, where heavier furniture could feel overwhelming. Grete Jalk was one of the key figures of post-war Danish design. Educated in Copenhagen, she developed a style influenced by designers such as Alvar Aalto and Charles Eames, combining modern forms with a strong focus on usability . Her work remains highly regarded and widely collected today. France & Søn was one of the most important Danish manufacturers of the 20th century, known for producing high-quality furniture and collaborating with leading designers, helping to bring Scandinavian design to an international audience . This is a sofa for those who appreciate authentic Danish design—well-crafted, comfortable, and timeless. The piece has been professionally and carefully restored by removing old coatings, staining and finishing with varnish. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with over 20 years of experience. Thanks to these treatments, the desk looks stunning and will serve its new owner for many years without fear of damage or wear from everyday use.
