Item description

A pair of lounge chairs designed by Eugen Schmidt and produced by the German company Soloform in the 1960s. The frames are made of solid cherry wood. Their most distinctive feature is the armrests: wide, flat and paddle-shaped, they flow smoothly into the front legs and the back frame. Slender, tapering legs and a double rail across the back give the chairs a light appearance, and the whole construction shows the careful craftsmanship Soloform furniture was known for. They are a fine example of German modernism, inspired by Scandinavian simplicity but with a more sculptural character of its own. The loose seat and back cushions are covered in their original purple fabric with button tufting. The deep seat and gently reclined backrest make for a comfortable lounging position, while the low silhouette suits a living room as well as a reading corner in a bedroom or study. The warm tone of the wood paired with the deep purple makes for a striking yet harmonious combination. Eugen Schmidt was a German furniture designer and manufacturer whose armchairs, sofas and chairs from the 1950s and 1960s were sold under the Soloform name. His furniture is known for its organic, carefully shaped forms and high-quality construction in solid wood, most often cherry and teak. Today it is a sought-after example of post-war German design. The pieces have been professionally and carefully restored by removing old coatings, staining in a teak tone and finishing with varnish. The restoration was carried out by a talented and experienced carpenter with over 20 years of experience. The cushions retain their original upholstery, which is in very good condition and shows only minor signs of use consistent with its age. Thanks to these treatments, the armchairs look stunning and will serve their new owner for many years without fear of damage or wear from everyday use. Seat height: 42 cm
