The printer. Camille Fonce was a celebrated French artist, painter and printmaker, best known for his evocative landscapes, masterful use of light and his spectacular views of both French and English rivers, forests and rural scenes. He often engraved the plates himself starting from paintings (his own or by masters such as Corot and Constable). The pencil signature generally indicates that it is an artist's proof or a limited edition approved and signed directly by the engraver. Publication date: There is a prominent inscription at the top left which reads: "Published May 1st 1891 by Henry Graves & Co. Ltd. London – Copyright U.S.A." This tells us that the print was officially published on May 1, 1891 in London.
, outside the main drawing: there is a small sketch of an isolated tree. In collectors' jargon this is called a remarque. Originally it was used by the artist to test the state of the acid on the plate, but in the nineteenth century it became a highly sought-after decorative element that identified the very first valuable editions.
