Item description

Luigi Cherbuin (Basel 1810 - Milan 1875) was an important etcher and designer active mainly in Milan. Author of a large number of views was the main illustrator of the Album Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan. This album was published annually from 1839 to 1861 first by Carlo Canadelli and then by Giuliano Canadelli e C., in the form of a strenna with plates depicting the works exhibited annually at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. He was a skilled and careful vedutista capable of capturing the beauty of everyday life both by engraving his own inventions and reproducing paintings or photographs of other authors. In this regard, it is worth remembering the series of views of Milan and elsewhere for a total of 119 plates from Daguerreotype, the first example of the use of photography as a model for engravings. In this print, part of the Daguerreotype series, is represented a view of Milan, one of the rare surviving views of imperial Milan. What we see is a representation of the colonnade of San Lorenzo before the demolitions that involved the surrounding buildings in 1935. In fact, between the 16 marble columns seven meters high with Corinthian capitals and the Basilica, you can see a section of the group of houses that occupied the current churchyard. The composition is lively with people in the street caught in different poses and attitudes: there are those who pray kneeling in front of a large votive aedicule with the image of Christ, those who look out from the liquor store on the left, and those who meet and stroll: a priest, an agent, a woman in the costume of Brianza, a seller of images and ribbons ... Delicate chiaroscuro contrasts suggest a sunny day and create a silvery light that invades the scene. Below the image, engraved title author and publisher Ferdinando Artaria and son. Excellent impression. Excellent state of preservation. Wide margins beyond the beat of the copper. Dry stamp on the left: Artaria. Another copy is kept in Milan (MI), Civic Graphic and Photographic Collections. Civic Collection of Prints Achille Bertarelli Bibliography: P. Arrigoni (edited by) Milano nelle vecchie stampe, n.193
