We are pleased to present this splendid oil painting on masonite panel mounted on plywood, dating back to the early 20th century. This magnificent landscape is signed lower left: L. Clara. The signature is attributable to the Italian painter Luigi Clara (Turin, 1870 – Genoa, 1925).
The painter depicts an Italian landscape with predominantly autumnal colors and a light reminiscent of sunset or a hazy sunrise. The scene is ideally divided into two areas: dense vegetation on the left and a body of water (likely a river or a tranquil pond) on the right. The left section is dominated by a dark, dense, and compact mass of woodland. From this tangled foliage emerges a tree with a tall, bare trunk, rising vertically, creating a striking contrast with the light clouds in the background. At the bottom left, an uneven path, painted in earthy tones, and the vegetation gently sloping towards the shore dominate the left section. The vegetation is characterized by intense shades of dark green, burnt brown, sienna, and touches of rust. The sky, beautiful and dynamic, is a central element. It is dotted with clouds painted with brushstrokes of pale blue, creamy white, and golden highlights. This warm, diffused light illuminates the center of the composition and delicately reflects on the calm surface of the water.
