Couple (Interrogation) is a 1955 oil on canvas painting by the French painter Maurice Stoppani (1921–2014), signed and dated by the artist. The work depicts a man and a woman in a close and psychologically intense encounter, fitting into the mid-twentieth-century French figurative tradition with a marked Cubist influence.
The two faces dominate the composition and are constructed through overlapping planes, angular profiles, and a deliberate simplification of anatomical forms. The muted tones of green, blue, and earth tones contrast with the luminous yellow of the female figure's hair and the red of the man's suit, creating a restrained yet highly expressive chromatic balance.
The landscape and the tree in the background complete the scene, contributing to its suspended and introspective atmosphere.
The work is signed and dated "Stoppani 55".
Dimensions: width 55 cm, height 45 cm.
