Antique 17th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas depicting a fascinating historical subject: the banquet of Cleopatra and Mark Antony.
The painting is attributable to the Tuscan school of the mid-17th century, with a possible attribution to Domenico Manetti (1609–1664), son and pupil of Rutilio. The light that highlights the figures against the dark background and the theatrical nature of the composition recall the naturalist and post-Caravaggesque tradition developed in the family workshop (the painting is not currently accompanied by an expert opinion, but one can be requested upon payment of the relevant additional costs).
The scene recalls the famous bet recounted by Pliny the Elder: Cleopatra, to impress Mark Antony and demonstrate her ability to consume a fortune in a single banquet, dissolved a precious pearl from her earring in vinegar, then drank the contents of the cup.
A large, horizontal painting, characterized by a composition rich in characters and meticulous detail. Cleopatra occupies the center of the scene, adorned with a precious robe, jewels, and an elaborate headdress. The queen offers a cup to Mark Antony, depicted to her left in splendid armor and a red cloak. Gathered around the protagonists are ladies, courtiers, servants, and musicians, whose gestures and glances enliven the banquet, lending dynamism to the composition.
The description of the lavishly laid table is particularly interesting: the light-colored tablecloth, the metal tableware, the breads, and the dishes form a rich still life. The light brings out the faces, hands, and costume details from the dark background, lingering on the reflections of the armor. Intense reds, blues, and greens lend the scene chromatic balance and a strong decorative presence.
The painting is accompanied by a 20th-century lacquered wood frame, which enhances the colors and depth of the composition, with some signs of aging. At over two meters wide, the painting is ideal for a large wall in a living room, dining room, or formal study. This work can lend character to a classic setting and create a striking dialogue with contemporary furnishings.
The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and re-coloring in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition.
