Item description

Burin Holy Family by Philipp-Andreas Kilian (Augsburg 1714 - ?1759), German engraver and publisher trained in a family of engravers active between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Remembered not only for his portraits but also for the reproduction of some works in the gallery of the Counts of Brühl in Dresden. In this print, taken from a painting by Johann Carl Loth (Munich 1632 - Venice 1698) and designed by Matthäus Österreich, the Virgin, Child and St. Joseph are represented through a skilful use of the engraving technique. The chubby and naked Child is lying on a strip of fabric supported by the hands of St. Joseph who lovingly holds him to himself. Joseph, on the right, is an old man, canute, with little hair and a forehead furrowed by deep wrinkles, wrapped in a richly draped tunic. His gaze is enraptured by that of the Virgin who, leaning on a base, observes him, hinting at a loving smile. In her left hand the Virgin holds a branch of lily flowers held by Jesus. The silvery atmosphere and the attention to the luministic effects give solemnity and sweetness to the composition. In the lower margin are indicated the author, the designer, the size of the painting and the reference to the gallery of the Count of Brühl (1700-1763), minister of finance and prime minister of the Principality of Saxony and the Kingdom of Poland, he was a great patron who owned a picture gallery with over six hundred paintings. This collection was reproduced in the: Recueil d'estampes gravées d'après les tableaux de la galerie de S. E. M. le Comte de Brühl, the first volume of which was published in 1754. The paintings were translated into prints by several engravers chosen through a competition. The present one is plate no. 43. Excellent impression, intense blacks. Very good condition. Wide margins beyond the beat of the copper. Watermark: "lily in a crowned shield". Bibliography: Le Blanc, 11.
