Designed in 1928, Marcel Breuer's Cesca chair is a symbol of traditional craftsmanship mixed with industrial methods and materials to help popularise tubular steel furniture. These 1960s Gavina chairs have hand-woven straw inserts on the seats and backrest. The wood is lacquered black. The tubular steel frame is in mint condition. They have a label on the back with the words Gavina. These chairs were produced by Gavina after Dino Gavina met Marcel Breuer in 1962 and convinced him to produce Cesca chairs again. Breuer eventually sold his furniture collection to the Italian design company Gavina SpA. It was largely the Breuer Collection that motivated Knoll to acquire Gavina in 1968, after its bankruptcy. Dino Gavina is best known for founding Gavina SpA, an Italian furniture manufacturing company founded to produce the work of designers from the burgeoning Italian design scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Gavina was an early producer of work by many influential Italian modernists, including the Castiglioni brothers, Carlo and Tobia Scarpa, Cini Boeri, Roberto Sebastian Matta, Vico Magistretti and Mario Bellini. Interested in Gavina's portfolio of designs and production facilities, Knoll bought the company in 1968. Seat height: 46 cm.
