Item description
Interesting tower clock lacquered with gilded and polychrome chinoiserie on a green lacquer ground. The case rests on a large plinth and is centred by a door with the upper part ribbed and surrounded by rich mouldings, inside it is painted a landscape scene with pagodas set in a garden in which there are characters in domestic scenes enlivened by the flight of beautiful birds, a rich triage enriches the side reserves; the case containing the mechanism has a main door, again ribbed with its glass with a cap rising like a pagoda, again decorated with landscapes and flowers, on the sides very dense decorations, again of a vegetable character. The 8-day mechanism made by Thomas Phippard that strikes the hours on a bell has a solid brass dial with a silvered brass ring with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, in addition an elaborate brass centre engraved with foliage contains the exhibition with the small seconds hand, the blued steel hands are beautifully made. The maker's name and place of work are engraved on a silvered plate above the compartment in which the lunar dates appear. The brass display, embellished with chiselled and gilded bronzes at the corners, opens at the top to reveal a cobalt night sky over which runs a painted vessel.
